概要	This paper shows how negated speech and thought presentation functions in narrative by using a corpus approach. A corpus consisting of texts from contemporary present-tense fiction was annotated with discourse presentation categories based on the Semino and Short model (2004). In addition, the new subcategory ‘g’ has been introduced for annotating negated discourse presentation. The data shows that negated thought presentation occurs more frequently than negated speech presentation. Negated cases of speech and thought presentation reveal characters’ inner worlds in a way that affirmatives do not.
