概要	The use of the present tense is not an unusual choice for narrating stories in contemporary literary fiction. Over the past two decades, every year the Man Booker Prize shortlist includes two or three titles written in the present narrative tense. In spite of its popularity, stylistic features of present-tense fiction have not yet been fully explored. In our corpus-based project, we compare 21st-century present-tense fiction with 20th-century past-tense fiction, particularly focusing on characters’ speech and thought presentation. This paper reports on some key findings from this project, highlighting characters’ direct speech in present-tense narrative.
