概要	This paper examines textual functions in the context of contemporary fiction of free direct speech (FDS), which is not demarcated from narration by quotation marks. In some of the recent titles of fiction, direct forms of speech are consistently presented in non-conventional ways. In "bare" reported clauses, in which the separation from the surrounding text is less overt, can lead to effects that are more complex and diverse in the relationship between the reported speech and its context. These effects could contribute to the reader’s interpretation or understanding of the text in ways that extend beyond the immediate emphasis on dramatization created by conventional formatting techniques.
