概要 | This paper discusses how the concept of the norms of speech and thought presentation is related to how speech and thought is presented in actual texts with reference to contemporary present-tense fiction, and thereby, reviews the meaning of the norms. Leech and Short (1981) argue in Style in Fiction that the norm or baseline for the presentation of speech is DS (direct speech) and the norm for thought presentation is IT (indirect thought). The “norm” is explained in terms of the “semantics of reporting”; how speech and thoughts are formed and (re)presented in social practice including literary fiction. Their claims about the norms of speech and thought presentations will be reviewed referring to two discourse presentation corpora: one is Semino and Short’s Lancaster Speech, Writing and Thought presentation corpus (2004), and the other is 21st-century contemporary present-tense fiction corpus (ongoing project). |
