概要	Although most researchers on Scots and Scottish English may know that the Scottish Vowel Length Rule (Aitken’s Law) does not demonstrate only length, students who study southern British Standard English or American English do not notice this. Also there is a great deal of confusion as to the operation of the rule. This paper shows that the quantity shift accompanies the quality shift and that the contextual lenition of the first elements of diphthongs of Scottish English reflects complementary quantity on the second elements, through acoustic vowel diagrams from original recordings. Besides regional exceptions of the rule are reported and phonological and historical factors are discussed.
