概要 | In 20th- and 21st-century fiction, character speech plays a prominent role in story development whereas in fiction in the 19th century the narrator tends to be as eloquent as the characters. Semino and Short (2004) show from corpus data of 20th-century narrative texts that the direct forms of speech presentation (combining free direct speech with direct speech) are the most frequently used discourse presentation categories. Semino and Short (2004) propose the abolition of the category of free direct speech (FDS). They argue that FDS is a mere subcategory of DS and cannot be regarded as an independent category on the speech presentation cline. This paper analyses examples of FDS and DS in contemporary present-tense fiction and reviews the distinction between these two categories. |
